You may have seen TENCEL™ on the label of your softest pyjamas and wondered what it actually is. Here is a simple guide to the fibre, how it is made, how it feels, and how it compares with cotton.
What is TENCEL™?
TENCEL™ is a brand of fibres made by the Austrian company Lenzing. The fibres are made from wood pulp, which is why they are described as plant-based or wood-based. There are two main types:
- TENCEL™ Lyocell, often used in denim, shirts and bedding.
- TENCEL™ Modal, a finer fibre known for its softness and drape, which makes it a favourite for sleepwear and loungewear.
At Rêve we use TENCEL™ Modal. It is the founding material of our collections.
How is it made?
TENCEL™ fibres begin as wood from responsibly managed forests. The wood is turned into pulp, the pulp is dissolved and then spun into fibre, and the fibre is woven or knitted into fabric. The result is a cellulose fibre: like cotton or linen, it comes from plants, but it is processed into a smooth, even yarn.
How does TENCEL™ feel?
The first thing most people notice is the softness. TENCEL™ Modal feels smooth and cool to the touch, drapes softly, and stays soft wash after wash. It is also breathable and naturally moisture-wicking, so it helps you stay comfortable rather than clammy through the night.
TENCEL™ vs cotton
| TENCEL™ Modal | Cotton | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Wood pulp | Cotton plant |
| Feel | Very soft, smooth, fluid drape | Soft, crisper, more structured |
| Breathability | Breathable, moisture-wicking | Breathable, absorbs moisture |
| After washing | Stays soft and smooth | Can feel stiffer, may crease |
| Best for | Sleepwear and loungewear that drapes | Everyday basics, crisp pyjamas |
Both are good choices. If you love a crisp, structured pyjama, cotton is classic. If you want something that feels softer and moves with you, TENCEL™ Modal is the one.
Is TENCEL™ good for sleepwear?
For many people, yes. Softness, breathability and a light, fluid drape are exactly what you want in something you wear all night. It is also easy to live with: it does not need the delicate handling that silk does.
Caring for TENCEL™
TENCEL™ is naturally moisture-wicking and resists odours, so it does not need washing as often as synthetic fabrics; airing it between wears keeps it fresh. When you do wash it, use a gentle cycle at 30°C with like colours and avoid bleach or harsh detergents. Hang it to air dry rather than tumble drying, and steam or iron on a low setting on the reverse side. For more tips, see our care guide.
