What is Modal Fabric? Modal vs Cotton, Explained

Modal is one of the softest fabrics you can wear, and it is everywhere in sleepwear and loungewear. Here is what modal fabric actually is, how it is made, how it compares with cotton, and how to look after it.

What is modal fabric?

Modal is a fibre made from wood pulp, most often from beech trees. The wood's cellulose is extracted, dissolved and spun into a fine, smooth fibre, which is then woven or knitted into fabric. Because the raw material is a plant but the fibre is made in a factory, modal is described as a semi-synthetic or regenerated cellulose fibre. It belongs to the same family as viscose and lyocell, and is sometimes called a type of rayon.

How does modal feel?

  • Very soft and smooth. Modal fibres are fine and even, so the fabric feels silky against the skin.
  • Fluid drape. It falls and moves with the body rather than standing stiffly.
  • Breathable. It lets air through and helps carry moisture away from the skin, which is why it is so popular for pyjamas.
  • Stays soft. Modal keeps its softness wash after wash and is less prone to shrinking than many cottons.

Modal vs cotton

Modal Cotton
Source Wood pulp (usually beech) Cotton plant

Breathability Breathable, moisture-wicking Breathable, absorbs moisture
After washing Stays soft, resists shrinking Can stiffen, crease or shrink
Best for Sleepwear, loungewear, underwear Everyday basics, crisp shirts and pyjamas

What is TENCEL™ Modal?

Not all modal is the same. TENCEL™ Modal is a branded modal fibre made by the Austrian company Lenzing from beech wood, produced through an environmentally responsible process. When you see TENCEL™ Modal on a label, you know where the fibre comes from. For a closer look, read what is TENCEL™?

Is modal good for pyjamas?

Yes, it is one of the best choices. Softness, a light fluid drape and breathability are exactly what you want in something you wear all night. Many modal sleepwear pieces add a small amount of elastane for stretch and shape, so the fabric moves with you.

How to care for modal

Modal is easy to live with. Wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C with like colours, and avoid bleach or harsh detergents. Hang to air dry rather than tumble drying, and steam or iron on a low setting on the reverse side. Airing it between wears keeps it fresh, so it does not need washing as often as synthetic fabrics. Always follow the care label on your piece; see our care guide for more.
